test(config): publish the overlap fixture after the recheck budget is spent - #7950
The dev lane=all batch 40824593871 failed on macOS (job 123284678184): tests/config/config-removed-opencode-free.test.ts > overlapping loads preserve protected originals with a 500 ms publisher delay. The second loader exited 1. The same case passed in the previous batch, and none of the PRs merged between the two batch heads touch config loading.
The cause is in the fixture. The 500ms case requires the overlapping loader to use exactly 9 of its 10ms rechecks (retries !== 9 throws overlap schedule missed) before the paused publisher finishes. The publisher waited a real Bun.sleepSync(500), so the result depended on wall-clock timing. When a loaded runner stretches the recheck sleeps past 500ms in total, the publisher finishes early and the case fails even though the recovery logic is correct.
This makes the ordering explicit. The second loader writes a marker on its 9th recheck, and in the 500ms case the publisher waits for that marker (bounded at 20s) before publishing. The 5ms case is unchanged. Every assertion is unchanged, including retries === 9 and the 1-2 protected copies.
Verification
bun test tests/config/config-removed-opencode-free.test.ts -t "overlapping loads preserve" on Windows x64 (OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1), with the second loader's recheck sleeps temporarily stretched 8x to simulate a loaded runner (probe only, not committed):
Original test, stretched: 5ms pass, 500ms fail.
This change, stretched: both pass.
This change, normal timing: both pass. The full file passes too.
bun run typecheck: exit 0.
NOT RUN: hosted macOS. That runs only in the batched dev check after this lands.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Tests
Improved overlapping-load test synchronization for the longer-delay scenario: the first process now waits for a publisher-release signal and then for confirmation that the second process has exhausted its rechecks, with timeouts. The shorter-delay scenario retains its timed wait. These changes affect test behavior only and do not change functionality available to end users.

Walkthrough
The overlapping-load test adds a marker for the second process’s exhausted recheck budget. In the 500 ms case, the publisher waits for that marker after release. In the 5 ms case, it retains the timed sleep.

Summary
Marker-based test synchronization tests/config/config-removed-opencode-free.test.ts
The test adds a marker path and writes the marker after the second process checks its overlap schedule. In the 500 ms case, publishing waits up to 20 seconds for the marker. If the publisher does not receive the release signal within 20 seconds, it exits with code 2. The 5 ms case retains its configured sleep.
lidge-jun/opencodex#7836: Adds the concurrent-load coverage and nine-recheck recovery-copy behavior that this test synchronization change extends.

Explanation
The title names the main change: a test fixture for the config overlap case now publishes after the recheck budget is spent, which matches the marker-based synchronization described in the summary and objectives. It is specific and concise, and it avoids vague terms. Its wording is somewhat dense, but a teammate scanning history would understand the primary change.

Reviewed the complete one-file diff at 15d3c0dde211b14109ba97a1ffb0790c1054f6f7, the linked-file retry owner in src/config/removed-opencode-free-backup.ts, and exclusive publication cleanup in src/config/atomic-write.ts.
The marker improves scheduling, but the remaining CodeRabbit finding is valid: tests/config/config-removed-opencode-free.test.ts:484 writes recheck-budget-spentbefore the ninth real sleep and its final recursive holdsOriginal observation. The publisher can then finish linkSync and unlink its temporary link during that sleep; the final observation can accept the now-single-link copy. retries === 9 still passes, so the case does not establish the claimed exhausted-linked-file-budget path.
Please signal the long-case marker only after the second loadConfig() returns successfully and the retry-count assertion passes, while the publisher is still held. Keep the bounded publisher wait, short-case behavior, protected-byte/link/copy assertions and product retry budget unchanged. This is a fixture ordering fix, not a request to increase the production wait.
Independent official Bun 1.4.4, matching frozen dependencies, fresh private homes and hard cgroups:
bun test --isolate tests/config/config-removed-opencode-free.test.ts -t "overlapping loads preserve": 2 pass, 0 fail, 37 assertions (Linux).
bun check --no-script --noEmit: pass, 2,236 files.
These passing runs do not prove the missing ordering invariant. The author's stretched-sleep Windows red/green control is separate evidence; I did not run native Windows/macOS. Current default gates/test-changed are green, but the concrete fixture finding remains unresolved. No batch dispatch, rerun or product-code change was made.
Writing the marker before the ninth recheck could let the publisher finish during that sleep; it is now written after loadConfig returns and the retry count is asserted.
If the second process pauses during its ninth sleep for more than 20 seconds, this exception is caught by backupOriginal. Cleanup unlinks the temporary file, so both processes can then reuse the original backup. The second process still reports nine retries, and the one-copy assertion passes. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Record the timeout separately and assert that it did not occur, or terminate the publisher with a nonzero exit code.

Both waits ran inside the mocked linkSync, so a thrown timeout was caught by backupOriginal and the case could still pass. The publisher now exits nonzero instead.
Addressed in the latest commit on this branch. Both publisher waits (the existing release wait and the new recheck-budget wait) now call process.exit(2|3) instead of throwing inside the mocked linkSync, so backupOriginal cannot swallow the timeout. expect(await first.exited).toBe(0) then fails the case. Probe: with the marker removed and the wait shortened to 2s, the 500ms case fails with Expected: 0, Received: 3. With the change, the full file passes on Windows x64.
